Parent Training
Helping Parents Feel More Connected and Equipped
When your child faces challenges, knowing what to do often feels confusing and overwhelming. It is common to find yourself trapped in cycles of negotiation or constant reassurance, left wondering if your actions are actually helping or unintentionally making things harder.
Parent training at Featherstone provides practical, evidence-based tools to help you respond to your child with greater confidence and clarity. Rather than focusing on blame or “perfect parenting,”our collaboration focuses on uncovering the “why” behind your child’s behaviors and implementing small, intentional shifts that can create lasting change within your home.
You are doing your best.
When your child is struggling, it is natural to feel worry, guilt and self-doubt.
Parenting support is never about judgment or pointing fingers.
Instead, we focus on understanding your child’s underlying needs and equipping you with the skills needed to navigate each day with confidence.
Children take their cues from caregivers to determine whether something in the environment is safe or manageable. By learning the “why” behind their actions, you can lead with a grounded, compassionate hand rather than just reacting to the crisis of the moment.
Sometimes, the most helpful thing we can do for our child is adjust what is happening around them.

What Does Parent Training Look Like?
Every family brings a unique set of needs and dynamics. Our sessions are specifically tailored to help you understand the patterns that are maintaining current struggles and equip you with a concrete plan to shift the environment at home through intentional, supportive responses.
Depending on your family’s unique needs, examples of interventions may include:

EMPOWERING THE FAMILY SYSTEM •
Children and teens do not experience struggles in isolation.
Their emotional world is shaped by developmental stage, temperament, and the daily dynamics of home life. Because of this, active engagement from caregivers is a vital component of treatment.
This does not mean that parents are the problem. It means parents are an essential part of the solution! My objective is to help the whole family in creating an environment that supports meaningful change.
Depending on your child’s age, needs and unique goals, parent training sessions may range from occasional check-ins and consultation, to more active parent-focused sessions and support.

FAQs
-
Absolutely. Parent support can be helpful even when a child or teen is not participating in therapy. In fact, parent training can be an especially helpful place to start when a child is resistant or unwilling to attend therapy. Our work together focuses on understanding what may be driving your child’s behavior and equipping you with concrete, practical tools to set appropriate boundaries, respond effectively, and feel more confident and grounded in your parenting.
-
Absolutely. It can be very helpful for parents to have their own dedicated space for support and guidance while their child works individually with another therapist. When multiple providers are involved, collaboration is an important part of providing effective, coordinated care. With appropriate consent, I will communicate and collaborate with your child’s therapist to ensure that our work is complementary and that everyone is working toward the same goals.
-
Therapy isn’t about giving you a list of rules or telling you that you’re parenting incorrectly. Instead, we work collaboratively to understand your child’s unique needs, identify patterns within the family, and develop strategies that are both effective and realistic. I take pride in attuning to your family’s unique culture, beliefs, values, and parenting style and tailoring our work accordingly.
-
You don’t have to wait for your child to be ready for therapy for change to happen. Parent training can give you tools to begin changing patterns at home and may be an effective first step toward helping your child become more open to treatment.
-
It depends - there is no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some families benefit from a few focused sessions around a specific concern, while others benefit from ongoing support as they work through more complex or longstanding patterns.
-
Not necessarily - although it is highly recommended when appropriate. It can be extremely helpful when both caregivers are active participants, particularly when consistency between caregivers is part of the treatment goal. However, based on the family’s circumstances, parent training can be tailored to your unique needs.
-
That is very common! Parent training at Featherstone can provide a space to better understand individual differences, establish shared goals, and develop a more consistent approach without requiring both parents to parent exactly the same way.
-
Yes! An essential component of parent training includes practicing strategies between sessions. “Homework” at Featherstone is intended to be realistic, manageable actions that can be incorporated into everyday family life—not another item on an already long parenting to-do list.
-
Often, yes. Sometimes the most helpful step is taking a closer look at the cycle that has developed and identifying a different way of responding. We can determine together which strategies may be worth trying and how to adapt them to your family.
